OUR MISSION

A mission statement is not something you write overnight… But fundamentally, your mission statement becomes your constitution, the solid expression of your vision and values. It becomes the criterion by which you measure everything else in your life.”

– Stephen Covey

EQUIPPING MILLENNIALS

TO BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITY

Mikal Pradia sought creative ways to teach entrepreneurship to millennials who found themselves unemployed and underemployed due to the scarce job market. The concept blossomed as new ideas were brought forth by the Get In Gear Now! Experience team as we sought modern ways to create a robust program that is not only informative but an engaging and interactive experience.

Armed with leadership skills, an understanding of the importance of financial literacy, and an entrepreneur mindset, students are equipped with not only how to create jobs for themselves, but how to also become job creators. As a result, helping close the unemployment rate and creating a shift towards wealth creation for our communities.

THE PROBLEM

Our nation has experienced profound economic change over the last three decades. Globalization, new technologies, and deliberate public policies shifted our economy from the production of goods to the production of knowledge and services. As millions of unionized factory jobs moved overseas, our nation lost a primary source of middle-class jobs for people without college degrees. Less-educated workers now have few options outside of non-unionized, low-wage service occupations.

Incarceration rates for youth and young adults are staggering, particularly for young males of color. The overall incarceration rate has skyrocketed in the past three decades, increasing from 139 prisoners per 100,000 U.S. residents in 1980 to 502 prisoners per 100,000 U.S. residents in 2009, a 260% increase. Radical changes in drug and sentencing laws, along with a decline in employment opportunities in central cities, have contributed to the rapid rise in incarceration rates, particularly among youth and young adults of color, who make up a disproportionate share of prisoners. The young adults that get released after serving their time face even steeper odds of finding any economic security.

Today, as millions still struggle with joblessness and millions more scrape by paycheck to paycheck, the Great Recession has heightened the sense that something is fundamentally wrong in our economy.  The reality is that for youth and young adults today, it is harder to either work or educate one’s way into the middle class. (1) The tumultuous economic environment has taken a serious toll on young Americans. Youth employment is at a 60-year low, and student loan debt has surpassed $1 trillion, and yet only the loudest negative voices in the room are getting mainstream media attention. (2) Paychecks have shrunk for all but the best-educated young workers. At the same time that the wage premium increased for educated workers, our nation decreased its investment in education and training, putting the college degree out of reach for lower-income and middle-class families. These two changes have made it even more difficult for youth and young adults to either work or educate their way into the middle class.

Los Angeles County has the largest population of any county in the nation, exceeded by only eight states. Approximately 27 percent of California’s residents live here.

There are 1.7 million students in elementary and high school, and many thousands more in college, including those in 27 public community colleges and universities. Approximately 73,000 residents are homeless. It is a diverse county, with more than 140 cultures and as many as 224 languages. Providing services to such a diverse population is challenging, evidenced by required printing of ballots in seven languages.
